The value of a local education

As a parent of a child attending a Bangkok university I find it very depressing to be told that they get home at 10pm every night because they're expected to be involved in "King and Queen" activities to decide the most handsome and beautiful new students

Has this got anything to do with education?
Such an inordinate amount of time is wasted on these shallow activities, which laud the value of vanity over and above what university is meant to bestow: acquiring valuable knowledge. How much hot air is released by politicians and academics alike on the subject of improving the standards of Thai education while this farcical routine of rituals and demeaning hazing activities goes on for months, taking up time potentially spent in the library or actually attending lectures and tutorials? Wise up, Thailand.
