Unable to widely use foreign debit cards

We really enjoyed the hospitality of the Thai people and also the excellent facilities that were available. I was very surprised to find that Thailand had a very dynamic economy and its people enjoyed a very high standard of living. But one issue that disappointed me was that everywhere I went to buy some goods I was unable to pay with my debit card. The shopkeepers only wanted cash. This is the first country where I had problems with paying with my bankcard. When I confronted the shopkeepers they told me that the debit card machine was not working. I hope the economic department of the government would take up this issue with the Retail Association of Thailand. Nonetheless, me and my wife had an enjoyable holiday in your country. Thanks.
