Symbols scary for some in the US

Ref: "Let's wear red ribbons as we once did green", Letters, August 11.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) considers the US budget deficit as the biggest threat to the world economy today, so does Lung Kip believe that if millions of Americans were all to wear the same colour shirt on the same day that the US budget deficit would then go away?
Some people are so afraid of political symbols that even that suggestion would be considered somehow unpatriotic, and do Thais want to use political symbols until they actually become afraid of them, not being educated enough to see beyond the symbols?
That is the point to which it has gotten in the US – to fear and denial as the result of the lack of education.
Thais, let symbolism have no power over you, let you have no use for it and let your only chosen colours be those of the black letters on the white pages of great books.
