Speaker's suggestion has some merit

Re: "Going to jail would make Thaksin a statesman, says new Senate Speaker", Interview, August 20.

Mr Speaker, you can say that again. There is no shortcut to not serving a jail sentence and no point in hoping that the overwhelming electorate majority will help him back jail-free. No one could ridicule him if he turns up at Suvarnabhumi and kisses his beloved land and enters the prison governor’s house.
No one could blame the government for giving preferential treatment to an ex-premier whose past contributions to the poor were immense.
Due process for amnesty could be submitted and no one in his right mind would recommend the rejection, which is tantamount to rejection of the sought-after  national reconciliation.
Mr Speaker, you have made my day, and I now believe that you are truly neutral and love your country in the right way.
