Regime change, supported by Nato forces, led to a power vacuum and political volatility in the country. At the beginning of the conflict, Gadhafi had warned that the insurgents were led by Islamists who intended to create their own state in Libya. The message reached the US. After only a few days of combat missions, the Pentagon withdrew its fighter planes because of concerns at home, that “we might support the wrong people, our enemies”. There should be no doubt that “the wrong people” were behind the attack in Benghazi: al-Qaeda has accepted responsibility.
The deadly attack on the US Consulate was in revenge for the killing of the network’s No 2, Sheikh Abu Yahya al-Libi. The new Libya has inherited Gadhafi’s radical and resilient Islamists.
