Oscar braces for 'Headshot'

Thailand's most updated English news website, newspaper english, breaking news : The Nation

With many countries unveiling their Oscar submissions for the 85th Academy Awards, local film buffs were waiting eagerly to hear which movie would represent Thailand. The Federation of National Film Associations of Thailand hasn’t made an official announcement yet, so it’s a good thing we have the social media as our occasionally reliable source.
And the word is that the federation will give Oscar a shot with Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s “Headshot (“Fon Tok Kuen Fah”). The breaking news comes via the Facebook page of filmmaker Tanwarin “Golf” Sukkhapisit, president of the Thai Film Director Association, and film critic “@deknang”, who tweeted it further. “It’s a good choice. ‘Headshot’ deserves the honour,” @deknang concurred.
If “Headshot” is indeed the choice, it will be Pen-ek’s fourth crack at an Oscar for best foreign-language film since “6ixtynin9” in 2000. He’s also had “Monrak transistor” and “Last Life in the Universe” in contention.
“Headshot” premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and has been a fixture on the festival circuit ever since. Off-circuit, it hits big screens in New York and Seattle later this week.
Hopefully the Oscar voters will like it as much as their Thai counterparts, who gave it the Golden Swan at the subhanahongsa Awards earlier this year.

Easy chairs
Musician Anusorn “Yong Armchair” Maneeted and Saturday Seiko singer Walailak “Koi” Muskpodok have been married for four months and hope to have a baby soon. Meanwhile gifted dressmaker Koi has her T-shirt Project, whereby old shirts are turned into bags and armchairs for people in need.
They make armchairs because that’s the name of her husband’s band. (You probably already guessed that.)
You can help Koi make an armchair. All you have to do is toss her those old T-shirts you never wear anymore. You have to do it by the end of October. Next thing you know, someone will be sitting on your shirt.
Just drop them off at A Day magazine. Get the details from “The T Shirt Project” Facebook page or www.ILoveLeo.net.
