A popular hangout for the Japanese expat community and drawing an ever-increasing number of hungry Thais, Marugame Seimen at the Rain Hill community mall on Sukhumvit Soi 47 offers a terrific range of Sanuki udon, crispy tempura and omusubi in a relaxed, self-service ambience.
Set up in Sanuki back in 2003, Marugame Seimen now has more than 600 outlets in its native region alone, a testament to the popularity of the fresh wheat flour noodle served in an aromatic broth of tuna and kelp. The first Bangkok branch opened in January on the second floor of Rain Hill and seats 50 in an airy, minimalist dining area that is open to the kitchen, allowing customers to watch the chefs making the fresh udon and preparing the dishes.
“We wanted to introduce traditional udon menus to local gourmets as well as provide comfort food to the local Japanese community in the area. Udon is an easy-to-eat option and offers great value for money. A bowl will cost you just 50 yen and it fills you up. The noodles may look thick but they are easy to digest,” says Thinnawat Limtrakul, marketing assistant of Nodu Food. “We make the udon fresh everyday using wheat flour imported from Sanuki.”
On offer are 10 hot wheat flour noodles served in three choices of soups: bukkake (thick soup), kake (clear soup) and spicy. Thinnawat says that the most popular orders are the Kamaage Udon , which is served in a hot-pot and comes with bukkake soup for Bt89, Mentai Kamatama Udon, which is blended with onsen eggs and Mentaiko fish roe for Bt119 and spicy pork udon served in clear soup for Bt89, which is not unlike Thai-style noodles.
You design your own toppings and side dishes, which range in price from Bt29 to Bt35 a pop. There are 10 choices of tempura made from vegetable, prawn, sweet potato, pumpkin, shitake mushroom, squid, boiled egg, chicken and imitation crab meat, as well as omusubi, rice formed into triangles, wrapped with seaweed and stuffed with grilled salmon, pollock roe, kombu kelp and pickles.
