This piece underscores the spiralling dysfunction in American politics. Elections cost billions of dollars. Presidents, even before their inauguration, have already formed re-election committees. Politicians are loath to constructively criticise Israel for fear of being the target of the very powerful American Israel Political Action Committee. Political careers are destroyed if one’s opponent paints one as a socialist. This dysfunction has led to the perpetuation of the two-party system with no real political choice and thus a situation where the party in power, whether Democrat or Republican, is bad and the opposing party worse.
