Meat is murder, and sometimes suicide too

Re: "Raised on meat and dairy - and doing fine", Letters, October 14.

Although I assume the purpose of Robin Grant’s letter was to disprove my arguments promoting vegetarianism, he proves nothing. He says he’s alive and well in his 60s despite the fact that he consumes meat and dairy. So what? There are alcoholics and smokers who are also alive and well in their 60s. Does that mean alcoholism and smoking is good for you?
What I have done over the years is provide the readers with overwhelming evidence that raising animals for food devastates the environment, human health and the animals. And instead of disproving the studies and statistics I present, my critics respond by either personally attacking me or, in Mr Grant’s case, writing an irrelevant letter about his own personal case history. Can Mr Grant, for example, dispute the claim made in the book “Diet for a New America” – whose author was nominated for a Pulitzer prize – that male meat-eaters in America are more than 10 times more likely to die of a heart attack than male vegans?
Finally, Grant writes, “Live and let live”. But how do the cows in the slaughterhouse feel about that?
You see, Mr Grant, if eating meat was only a health issue, I would feel that what people want to do to their own bodies is their business. But when people are destroying the environment and murdering and torturing animals, it quickly becomes my business.
