Getting cute with off cuts

A young designer puts his company's wood scraps to good use with funky office accessories under the brand name Ugly Cute

For the last three decades, Pacific Wood has been supplying quality veneers to the local market and producing fine solid wood furniture under the trade name Romanee,

Last week, it found a few market among traders and shoppers at the Bangkok International Gift and Houseware Fairs with its new selection of simple wooden decor items and office furniture under the label Ugly Cute.
Aimed at promoting environmental responsibility, the ideas come from young designer Ratthee Phaisanchotsiri, who transforms the leftover wood from the factory into funky furnishing items that will appeal to young professionals.
Using maple, beech and mahogany, sometimes in the same pieces, he plays with the details and focuses on showcasing the textures and natural hues of the wood.
“Our company has been supplying veneers for 30 years and we manufacture wooden furniture, so we have plenty of off cuts left in the factory. My boss wants to turn them into valuable products and the best way to do that is to create accessories for the office,” Ratthee says.
He invites you to jazz up your workplace with such quirky items as a round wall clock, waffle-like wall hooks and a ceiling light fashioned out of from beech. Other creations include a Talking Chatty wall board, Cloudy bins in blue and pink, house-shaped magnet clip holder, robot-like storage boxes for name cards and a cookie-shaped magnet clock made from beech and teak.
There’s furniture too, including tables and chairs, coffee tables and stools and even a comfy dog sofa for your pooch.
Prices range from Bt350 to Bt20,000.
