There was quite a drama at Who? magazine early this year when owner Somporn Juangroongruangkit abruptly replaced its founding editor-in-chief, Nongnat "Kai" Kamolsad Na Ayutthaya, with her daughter-in-law.
Kai, who’d previously worked at OK! magazine and The Nation’s sister paper Krungthep Turakij, was reportedly miffed, feeling she shared in the proprietorship at Who? But no, she was gone by May, declaring that she’d start another magazine of her own.
No need to ask who? or what? Just say hello! and ok! to the newest monthly title at the newsstand, Let’s Talk About. Charging Bt85, it’s aimed at pretty much the same kind of readers, with lifestyle features and profiles of top society folks.
On the inaugural cover are lovebirds Porapol Adireksarn and Pakaorn (Tassanapan) Sirisukha. Inside you can find out what Democrat bigshot Korn Chatikavanij’s wife Varakorn has in her wardrobe and visit businessman Serm Penchati’s resort home.
So we have a fresh front in the battle of the Ritz Club mags. We predict there’ll be no losers – hi-so people adore reading about themselves, so the more stories the better.
When, when?
Over in slightly less wealthy Celebrity Land, the stars get hassled if they marry in a hurry, but also if they wait too long. Actor Kanchai “Num” Kamnerdploy has been hooked up with May Fungarom for years, and still no wedding chimes.
The news media, bless them, keep trying to light the fuse, so when Num and May travelled to Japan recently, word went around that he’d proposed to her there. No, May said, she only went there on an assignment with Patcharapa “Aum” Chaichua and rather unromantically dragged Num along.
However, May broadly hinted that the reporters might want to ask her about marriage again next year. “Phi Num wants to ordain as a monk next year, and after that he’ll be ready to settle down.”
News-hounds duly marked their 2013 calendars “Nag Num and May about monkhood, marriage”, starting on January 1 and repeated every day thereafter.
