Soft Japanese cakes with healthy fillings are the highlight at Bake A Wish

A friendly cafe decorated in Japanese style and offering a range of delicious cakes along with interesting hot and cold drinks, Bake A Wish Japanese Homemade Cake recently opened its doors on the second floor of Mega Bangna. It’s proving popular with exhausted shoppers in need of a sit down and pick-me-up before heading out to explore more of the gigantic mall.
Bake A Wish belongs to the family of Nikan Prachyasiltawut and a Japanese partner, who runs a bakery chain in Kobe. They first got together back in 2006 and opened their first branch on Soi Suksawat 19, introducing authentic Japanese-style soft cakes to eager Thai customers.
The recipe combines Japanese and western techniques and emphasises natural flavours. The layered cakes are made from special flour and the cream is wonderfully fresh, the fruits tasty and the Belgian chocolate sinfully rich.
“We’re one of the pioneers of Japanese cakes in Bangkok. Our soft cakes are less sweet, healthy and light too so customers can eat them without feeling guilty,” says Nikan.
The newest branch is fitted out with natural wooden tables, comfy chairs and sofas and seats about 25.
Nikan says the most popular sweets are the matcha mousse cake (Bt65) and the “dark knight”, a soft three-layered delight of chocolate sauce and brownie, which comes topped with strawberry sauce and macadamia mixed with the chocolate sauce and costs Bt95.
A smooth, four-layered strawberry shortcake is adorned with sliced strawberry and chocolate, also for Bt95, while a tempting chou cream with macadamia filling is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and the mirror mirror pudding made from Chinese plum goes for Bt65.
Bake a Wish serves green tea frappe for Bt75, Earl Grey milk tea for Bt65, green apple honey smoothie for Bt80 and hot cappuccino for Bt60.
“We used Suzuki coffees. They’re aromatic and strong,” says Nikan.
