ONLY TEMPORARY

New exhibition explores the shifting dynamics of Bangkok's contemporary art scene

A blacked-out advertising banner, photographic documentation of urban tectonics, drawings operating as a drifting map and hand writing on advertising space reading “This is a copy of a copy of ...” These, along with an exhibition unit constructed out of ancient wooden pillars and a table and benches made from rotten wall-panels from the PSG Art Gallery, are among the highlights of “Temporary Storage #1”, an exhibition that’s opening at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.
Invited by the exhibition department to present his debut art project as part of the experimental project 2012, curator Chitti Kesemkitvatana and his assistant Mary Pansanga have turned the space on the fifth floor into an alternative platform for contemporary art.
Chitti says the exhibition seeks to explore the possibility of creating “multi-platforms for contemporary exhibitions”.
The “all(zone)” architects collective designed the exhibition unit while artist Suwicha Dussadeewanich, transformed the old pillars using traditional Thai construction techniques into a temporary space.
Inside, visitors will be introduced to a new experience of art appreciation.
They can sit on benches made from the rotten wood panels from the PSG Art Gallery and examine the three broadsheet newspapers spread on the table, which feature critiques of the contemporary Thai art scene by young art critic Vipash Purichanont as well as Mary’s “Cinematheque Experience”.
There’s also photography by Pattara Chanruechachai and Viriya Chotpanyavisut and drifting maps of Bangkok designed by Orawan Arunrak.
The broadsheet papers also show Pratchaya Phinthong’s original drawing that is made up of endless words reading “This is a copy of a copy of a copy…”.
The innovative broad-sheets are designed Nattapol Rojjanarattanangkool.
Outside the gallery, Chitti uses advertising banners as an exhibition space too. Banners at National Stadium, Siam, Phayathai and Victory Monument Skytrain stations display photography by Disorn Duangdao, Miti Ruangkritya, Supapong Laodheerasiri, Sathit Sattarasart, Noon Passama, Pathompon Tesprateep, Prachaya, Viriya, Vipash and all(zone).
