Lung Kip seems to be highly agitated by the decision to strip Abhisit Vejjajiva of his military rank for dodging the draft, because he makes a series of claims that deserve to be challenged.
Firstly, likening this ruling to the occasional accusations by cranks that President Obama is not American, is a communist and a Muslim is ludicrous – no evidence has so far been unearthed to substantiate these claims, whilst evidence of wrongdoing in Abhisit’s case is plainly evident.
The writer’s claim that stripping Abhisit of his military rank is a “cheap shot” has more substance, but the ruling could be seen as an example of “chickens coming home to roost”. During Abhisit’s administration, hundreds of red-shirt supporters were jailed for months without charges being brought, and he certainly did not attempt to stop a vast increase in lese majeste accusations, many of them lodged on the basis of flimsy or non-existent evidence.
I also doubt the basis of the writer’s claim that Thaksin is afraid of Abhisit – why should he be? Abhisit has never won an election, and he and his party lag significantly behind Pheu Thai Party in virtually every poll, with PM Yingluck consistently scoring higher on popular approval and support.
Furthermore, the statement that her government is Thailand’s “dirtiest ever” can quickly be dispelled by a reference to history books, at least the factual and objective ones.
As for “the communist dream of the world being a fairer and more equitable place”, well, yes, but it was only a dream, especially for countries that have had the misfortune of being subjected to communist rule – remember the joy across eastern Europe when the Iron Curtain finally collapsed?
