Tamarine Tanasugarn won an all-Thai opening encounter by outclassing Nudnida Luangnam 6-2 6-4 in the first round of the US$75,000 Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge in Dubai yesterday.
The unseeded Tammy, 35, cruised through the first set in less than 30 minutes before her 25-year-old compatriot fought back in the second. Nudnida, who hails from Sukhothai, stayed neck and neck with her senior until the ninth game, when Tammy broke her serve to go up 5-4.
Tammy then had to save two break points in her service game before closing out the match. She will play third-seeded Nina Bratchikova of Russia in round two.
