It never seems to matter which subgroup of Super Junior is playing in Thailand, tickets for the Korean boy band’s show still sell faster than for just about any other concert. This time was no exception, with fans packing out both the press conference for “2013 Super Junior-M Fan Party ‘Break Down’ in Bangkok” at Parc Paragon and the concert itself last weekend at Thunder Dome, Muang Thong Thani.
The eight cute Korean boys, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Zhou Mi, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun and Henry, came out on stage during the press conference and were welcomed by thunderous screams. Thailand is the first stop on a tour to promote their new album, “Break Down”. After the press con, 800 lucky fans attended the “Super Junior-M: Fan Signing Session.”
Super Junior-M is the first international boy band and SuJu subgroup to feature members from China, namely Zhou Mi and Henry. The two also wear producer and songwriter hats. The Cantopop subgroup released an EP titled “Perfection” in 2011 and their debut album “Me” in 2008.
This new album explores different music genres, including pop, dance, dubstep, R&B, ballad, house, and electro-pop. “Break Down” is the lead single and it mixes pop dance with dubstep. Henry co-produced and composed the album with his production team The NoizeBank and collaborated with Zhou Mi on “Go” and “It’s You”.
“As everybody knows, our second album only came out a short time ago, so we are really working on promoting it. Henry and Zhou Mi wrote the songs and one of them has been used for a movie. We have the same choreographer as for Super Junior’s ‘Sorry Sorry’,” said Eunhyuk, during a group interview.
“I found my inspiration for writing the songs from my friends. It’s about a boy’s love – not mine. I’m not sure whether Thai fans – who are mostly girls – will understand it or not,” said Henry.
Asked about their personal favourites on “Break Down”, Ryeowook was the first to reply, saying he liked the cheerful number “Go”. Eunhyuk preferred the instrumental version of “Break Down”. Donghae opted for “Goodbye My Love” and Siwon loved “A-Yo”.
“I think that it is ‘Go’, it’s the first song that we all sing and dance together,” said Zhou Mi.
The day after the press conference, Super Junior-M thrilled “Elf Thai”, as Thai fans are known, with their performance, solo shows and interaction in a full-length concert at Thunder Dome.
The Korean boy band opened with “Go” before taking a break to greet fans, introducing themselves to them, and bringing some fans on stage to play a photo quiz about Thailand. Eunhyuk was the loser, with Sungmin and Henry coming out tops. Henry is the only member with a good Thai accent and surprisingly also speaks the Northern language.
After that, each performed their separate shows, singing, dancing and playing music instruments. Ryeowook, Siwon and Eunhyuk sang “Xing Qing", Zhou Mi performed “Ju Li De Yong Bao" and Siwon crooned "You Raise Me Up". Kyuhyun joined with Henry on “Ment” shortly and “Na Xie Nian”, before Eunhyuk and Donghae duetted on “Hello.”
They returned to stage for back the encore “Me” in an a cappella version and also performed “Break Down”. Before the concert came to an end, Elf Thai fans held up a message saying “Cuz It’s U. Wo Shi Ai Ni” over a red heart.
