Chiang Mai's Mont Blanc Sweet Cafe earns fresh fans in Bangkok
If the long queues outside big restaurants, cafes and bakeries put you off, point your nose instead toward the lovely aromas wafting out of humble and quiet Mont Blanc Sweet Cafe a popular Chiang Mai franchise with a new home at Siam Center.
Building on the chain’s reputation for delectable, soft mousse cakes in the traditional French style, the branch is operated Krisdakorn Yensira, Apiradee Deewongkij and two other friends. Unlike the decor at its sister outlets, here you have a combination of Mexico and Moroccan, with colourful armchairs and modern graphics on the walls.
“Mont Blanc’s founder is a Chiang Mai native who learned to make pastries in Japan,” says Apiradee. “But her recipes are based on traditional French ideas – light on the stomach and melt in the mouth. We have our own factory in Bangkok, so customers can be assured that all the cakes are fresh and flavourful.”
There are more than 30 kinds of cakes, alternating every day. I try slices of the three-layer Soft Strawberry Shortcake served with vanilla ice cream for Bt215 and a yummy Matcha Mousse White Chocolate with kidney-bean filling and a sour and refreshing Passion Fruit Mousse Cake, each Bt85.
The signature dish is a Bt185 DIY Mont Blanc, with fresh cream blended with chestnut and served with cherry, strawberry and chocolate ice cream. Other popular items include the White Chocolate Cheese Pie, Mango Pear Cheese, Souffle Cheese Vanilla and Chocolate Mousse.
To quench the thirst, Krisdakorn offers espresso blends by P&F, which won an award in Italy. Don’t miss the hot cappuccino, cold green tea and cold chocolate for Bt75 for a cup.
“Our coffee has a strong flavour,” she says. “We use quality beans from 10 sources. Customers can discover anywhere from seven to 10 different scents in one shot!”
There are also 18 healthy smoothies, including Berry Beauty Float, Peach Yoghurt and Berry Frozen Yoghurt.
