The new kid on the Sukhumvit 47 block gives Japanese food a sexy edge
A bustling city can never have too many cool places so the opening of rooftop bar and restaurant Kinki on Sukhumvit Soi 47 is being heralded as a welcome addition to Bangkok’s chic hangouts.
Bringing in the DNA from its Singaporean origins along with the label “Japanese with an Urban Attitude”, the funky restaurant is wrapped in graffiti art by award-winning local artist, NEF Crew, and offers punters five live DJ sets a night.
There’s even a choice between indoor and outdoor seating. If you’re after a feast, grab a table inside. If you prefer a chill out session with a view of the Bangkok skyline, head out to the open area outside.
It may be trendy but Kinki is also surprisingly low key. The volume is kept to the minimum so you can enjoy the company of your friends. However, crazy party nights are held occasionally, so do check with the management first if you’re planning a quiet night out.
Start your evening with a dish of savoury and addictive momotaro tomato (Bt150), where big chunks of tomatoes are slathered with ginger dressing. For a more filling snack, opt for the king salmon maki (Bt350) with slightly grilled salmon filling, or the colourful and flavourful dragon maki (Bt350) with prawn tempura, avocado and snow crabs.
The drink menu offers everything from sake and sochu through beers, wines and cocktails. Recommended is the signature Magari Thai (Bt240) – a spicy, herbal blend of lemongrass, galangal, lime, honey and kaffir lime-infused tequila. It might sound like tom yum in a glass, but it is pleasantly balanced and the tequila is not that pungent. Honey and lime help round out the favours and make it very addictive.
For a more refreshing drink, order a Shibuya Crush (Bt150) that has ginger and kumquat muddled with lime, rum and basil. Another stiff concoction is Tokyo Ice Tea (Bt240) that has vodka, rum, gin, tequila, midori, lime and Sprite packed in an ice-filled glass.
