Thaworn has date with destiny at home

Asian No 1 Thaworn Wiratchant is flying halfway round the world to keep a date with destiny at the US$1-million Thailand Open, the season-opening tournament on both the OneAsia and Japan Golf tours.

The Thai veteran, who was the only Asian in the elite field at the WGC-Cadillac Championships won by Tiger Woods in Florida on Sunday, is a multi-winner on tours big and small, but his home Open has so far eluded him.
He hopes to fill that gap on his CV this week at Thana City Golf & Sports Club on Bangkok’s outskirts, where he faces one of the strongest Asia-Pacific line-ups ever assembled, including 13 winners on the Japan Tour last year.
“The Thailand Open is special to me and I would love to win the King’s Trophy. I have been a spectator at the event, caddied in it and played regularly since turning professional but I have never won,” he said.
“That is my dream.”
Last year the Thai became the oldest player to be crowned Asian No 1, at 45 years and 351 days, after a glorious season which saw him win three times on the Asian Tour and take his career tally to a record 15 titles.
His Majesty the King donated the Thailand Open trophy, which is the reason that local pros, including the deeply spiritual Thaworn, believe  the tournament is especially significant.
