Some folks just beg for trouble
The non-governmental organisation iLaw - which aims for nothing less than making everyone equal before the law - has a great idea that ought to let filmmakers and TV producers vent some frustration
It’s announced a short-film contest on its Facebook page, hot on the heels of Thai PBS chickening out of that “Tob Jote” series about the monarchy. Given that, and the aborted “Nua Mek” series and the banned movies “Insects in the Backyard” and “Shakespeare Must Die”, the organisation wants to see films that push the envelope.
The mission is to make “The Movie that Should be Banned”, as the contest is subtitled (“Nang Na Ja Ban”), but that somehow eludes censorship. Anyone can enter. The content ought to be “sensitive” but shouldn’t violate any law – merely poke at the legal edges.

Too full to wed
Obviously Araya “Chompoo” Hargate didn’t stuff reporters’ mouths full enough with the ready-to-eat tofu that she and Apicha Nithiananataporn have put on the market under the name Daughter.
At the grand opening of the microwave, the press gobbled down Daughter but still wanted to know whether she’s going to marry her businessman boyfriend Wisarut “Knot” Rangsisingpipat this year.
“Too busy!” she said for the umpteenth time while nuking another batch of tofu. “And we both still enjoy working.” Knot loves her tofu and gave her some marketing advice, she said. She’ll be arranging movie and TV tie-in advertising and flog the snack on the social media. If you use Instagram, you’ve probably already seen a picture of Chompoo cradling her Daughter, so you know she’s putting her stardom to good (and cost-free) use.
Her friend and partner Apicha is there to testify to the food’s quality. He’s heir to the Nang Payaban (Nurse) brand, a top-selling tofu for 40 years. “It’s a big investment in my life, but I didn’t think we’ll break even in the first year,” Chompoo said. After that, presumably, we can ask again about marriage.
