Why apologise for your compatriot's sake?

Re: "Thatcher protests undignified", Letters, April 13.

It is strange that one citizen has to apologise for conduct of his fellow citizens just for the sake of saying that “we are not all like that”. That Briton better believe that many of you are like that. The perception of Britain as pure and gentlemanly has long been tainted by football hooliganism and many other examples that are not British.
Though I understand the feeling of the aggrieved but consider now unfair when she cannot answer back. Irrespective of the ills proclaimed against Margaret Thatcher, I still hail her as the best proactive leader in peacetime.
