Every year pre-Songkran, one has high hopes of fatality reduction because of greater force imposed against drunk drivers. Disappointment always follows. Why? The answer lies in our sanuk mentality – have fun now and pay the price later.
Shock treatment is called for one month prior to Songkran, such as unsavoury clips of accident scenes shown daily on all television stations at 8pm, interviews with victims and their relatives, and catchphrases like “drink-drive-maimed-death” prominently displayed. The media are good at selling, and should contribute to correct this social ill.
