It’s very impressive, but he’s not that great at kicking a football. A case of mistaken identity turned hilarious after Prasad, whose Twitter tag is @RVP, found new life as a soccer hero. The BBC had to step in and explain that he’s “the @RVP who is not Robin van Persie”.
Fans of Manchester United watching their boys against Aston Villa on Monday night thought they’d discovered access to Dutch forward Persie, whose hat-trick sweetened Man U’s league championship. But Robin isn’t @RVP, he’s @Persie_official.
Prasad, 52, was bewildered when congratulatory tweets started showering down on him. “You really made the difference for us this season, well done!” a complete stranger told him. As it happens, though, Prasad is also a fan of Man U and Persie, and was watching the match on TV, so he caught on fairly quickly.
Still, his replies to fans explaining their error did nothing to stem the flood. He ended up blocking more than 4,000 incoming messages during and after the game.
Part of the problem was that scores of fans were so jubilant over the victory that they no longer cared which RVP they were tweeting and had great fun compounding the initial error. Prasad was soon replying in the same light-hearted manner. He expected to be invited to join the team soon, he declared. “Since jersey No 20 is already taken, hope Alex Ferguson will give me No 21,” he tweeted.
The fans must be wondering why Persie is tweeting about telecommunications in India, Prasad noted, but if he retires from football he can always “join Vodafone India”.
Prasad told the BBC he understands football-crazy people. “I’ve written on Manchester United and Robin van Persie’s Facebook and Twitter accounts too – but I never received a reply!”
Well, thanks to his clever reaction, he’s got his own fan following now.
