Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement as manager of Manchester United Football Club after 27 years drew pretty much the same wildly divided reaction as margaret Thatcher's recent death, underscoring just how controversial he was. Half the world's footie fans wep

Fergie is universally recognised as a football legend (despite the fact that he apparently does exist). He guided Man U to a record 13 Premier League titles as well as 10 Community Shields, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two European Cups, and groomed many of the game’s finest players.
So his unexpected announcement came as a shock. Within eight minutes it was the No 1 trend on Twitter. Fans bid farewell by swapping titbits all night long, with those who somehow fail to see Man U’s appeal contributing their own cheeky remarks.
_ From British Prime Minister David Cameron (@David_Cameron): “Ferguson’s achievement at #UFC has been exceptional. Hopefully his retirement will make life a little easier for my team #AVFC [Aston Villa].”
_ The Beeb (@BBCSport): “Breaking: In honour of Sir Alex Ferguson retiring, all Premier League clubs will play additional five minutes of added time this weekend.”
_ CNN blabbermouth Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan): “Sir Alex, 10 trophies since 2005 – gone; [Arsenal manager] Arsene Wenger, no trophies since 2005 – continues.”
From some other guys …
_ @FootyBull: “Now that Ferguson is retiring, who’s going to be in charge of the FA?”
_ @Funnygooner: “chewing gum sales dropped by 60 per cent in the UK as Fergie announces his retirement.
_ @san_t_leonard: “#Fergieretire? Must have run out of gum.”
_ @Footy_Jokes: “Sir Alex Ferguson retires after 27 years at Manchester United! Well, 30 years if you add on all the injury time!”
Just about everybody came up with a variation on this supposed quote from Howard Webb, a referee widely believed to favour Man U: “It came as a complete shock. Our club will never be the same without him!”
_ @invincibleAFC: “Time for Howard Webb to retire. No more pocket money.”
