Don't expect or want anything in return

Re: "Biggest givers set a good example", Letters, June 3.

Vint Chavala wonders why the four richest Thai businesspeople didn’t make the Forbes managzine list of “48 Heroes of Philanthropy”. Well, Khun Vint, you don’t have to be super-rich to be a hero philanthropist.
Tip a taxi driver, a gas-station attendant, a valet-parking attendant, a food server or a bellboy and you are the all-time greatest philanthropist. Instead of making remarks about Forbes’ list of Thailand’s biggest ‘takers’”, ask yourself, “Did I ever give without expecting something in return?” The real hero of philanthropy might be the guy sitting right next to you who gives but never brags.
When you give and want something in return, like a compliment, a favour or even a simple thank-you, then you are not giving. You are doing business.
