Academic's puzzling embrace of populism

Re: "Thaksin's populist policies blamed for rifts in society", News, May 31.

Academic Nidhi Eawsriwong praises Thaksin Shinawatra for introducing populist policies to Thailand. He also says it is “fine” for the Yingluck government to implement the rice-pledging scheme because it helps farmers, rich and poor, get easy money.
I have some observations: First, I find it hard to believe that such a reputable academic as Nidhi would encourage populist policies, knowing full well they will likely lead our country to “total dictatorship” – as he himself has admitted and accepted.
Second, to see Nidhi flaunt the use of our tax money obtusely without giving ample reasons puts a question mark on the academic himself: What about sensible policies such as education and teaching the poor about self-reliance?
Third, I don’t question Mr Nidhi’s popularity among the red-shirt group, but I do question his integrity and credibility as an academic.
