It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a beard

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a beard

Remember "Superman Returns"? DC Comics and Warner Bros hope you'll just forget that 2006 attempt to revive their flagship franchise, which gets a second reboot in "Man of Steel".

It’s another origin tale, essentially combining the first two Christopher Reeve “Superman” movies of the 1970s and ’80s, but recasting them in a darker tone.

A guy simply known as Clark, he’s full of angst as he drifts around and struggles with his amazing superpowers and feelings of alienation. He’s grown a beard – never mind how he shaves the darn thing.
Christopher Nolan was drafted as a producer to give Superman the same dramatic weight as Batman in “The Dark Knight”. He gets help from comic-book writer and “The Dark Knight Returns” screenwriter David S Goyer. They started by getting rid of Superman’s red underwear.
The director is Zack Snyder, a hero to comic-book fans thanks to his slavish devotion to the page in his graphic-novel adaptations of “300” and “Watchmen”.
“Man of Steel” looks like a winner so far, and a sequel has already been ordered.
It’s in 2D as well as 3D in some cinemas, include Imax. Read more about it in the story at left.
 Also opening

“The Barrens” – New Jersey’s Jersey Devil makes for unhappy campers. Led by Stephen Moyer (“True Blood”), they are looking for the perfect spot to set up their tent but instead find unspeakable horrors. The director is Darren Lynn Bousman, who did several installments of the “Saw” series.

“True Love” – Newlyweds wake up after their wedding night to find they have been separated and locked into cells. They are then forced to answer yes-or-no questions or else face the consequences. A straight-to-video release elsewhere, it’s also known as “Y/N: You Lie, You Die”.

“The Silent War” – “Infernal Affairs” screenwriters Alan Mak and Felix Chong adapt and direct this thriller starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai as a blind piano tuner. His exceptional hearing makes him perfect for a spy mission. This was nominated for several awards last year, and the Thai duo of Traithep Wongpaiboon and Nopawat Likitwong won for best sound effects at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival.

“Yamla Pagla Deewana 2” – Dharmendra and Bobby Deol are back as scheming father-and-son con artists in this sequel to a 2011 Bollywood action comedy. It’s at Paragon, Major Cineplex Sukhumvit and Major Rama III.
