Abandon servers that collaborate on spying

Re: "Surveillance plan reeks of sinister intent", Editorial, August 14.

Wednesday’s editorial was quite the most powerful I have read in some time and is worthy of its author and the masthead. The country is in very choppy waters and it is heartening to see a newspaper wading in to denounce, with such vigour, a flagrant attempt by the police to spy on citizens. The pretext of “national security” is utterly specious and is the usual excuse trotted out by regimes to tighten their grip on power and silence dissent.
The solution is quite simple for those seeking to send a clear message: close their Line account and move to another provider. Line has failed to make its position clear quickly, and should therefore suffer the consequences from its users here in Thailand. Unless and until end-users make their feelings known, clearly app providers will not clarify their position on such requests to spy on them.
