UK's 'sound scientist' plugs in

Hot DJ Tom Middleton flies in for Champion's final party at Bed Supperclub

This weekend sees an emotional moment for club-music promoter Champion Sound. Its staff is waving goodbye to long-time party venue Bed Supperclub, with the final party tonight.
For more than a decade the group brought to Bangkok internationally acclaimed acts like Stanton Warriors, Goldie, Calvin Harris, Above & Beyond, Andy C, LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad, Boy George and Darren Emerson. Champion’s done its fair share in shaping the city’s nightlife. Tonight it hosts the party at Bed with Tom Middleton, one of the UK’s top spinners.
“I don’t even know where to start,” says Champion Sound founder David Milligan. “It’s been 11 years of crazy parties, amazing music and amazing people. We’ve done 200-plus parties at Bed and have been involved in some capacity from pretty much the beginning. We’re so proud to have played our part in what was nothing short of a groundbreaking and game project.
“This is going to be our last-ever party at the venue, so we want to make it very special and go out with a bang. Tom Middleton is one of my absolute musical heroes and has been since the late ’90s. He will not disappoint – this will be the perfect ending to what has been a truly epic saga.”
A meticulous technician with a thirst for all musical forms, from bass to breakbeats, Beatles to baroque, Tom Middleton is not just a DJ but also a sound scientist.
A pioneering composer, producer and DJ, Middleton rose to fame in the early 1990s with “En-Trance to Exit”, a collaboration with Richard D James. His solo “My Splendid Idea” followed soon after and the rest is history. Middleton became one of the most-requested DJs for special VIP events. He warmed up the crowd for Kanye West at the Big Chill and has shared the stage with the likes of Duran Duran, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dog, Busta Rhymes and Mark Ronson.
He was recently appointed sound architect and music director for Yotel’s flagship hotel in New York’s Times Square and has been involved in many major brand and product launches. He’s an expert in pro audio hardware, software and DJ equipment, and his opinion is sought in the design and development of new products.
Middleton approaches every venture, from productions and remixes to compilations and sound design installations, with the attention to detail that is usually reserved for the likes of architects, surgeons, engineers and head chefs. His mix CDs such as “The Sound of the Cosmos”, “3D” and “The Trip 1 & 2” show true precision and forethought, with the DJ spending days studying the structure and key of each track and how they relate to each other.
