Military gets away with murder

Staff Sgt Robert Bales killed 16 unarmed civilians in Afghanistan in March 2012. He was arrested immediately by the US Army, court-martialled and last week was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

Contrast that with the treatment given to the Thai soldiers who killed 32 lightly armed citizens at the Krue Se Mosque, in direct disobedience of an order from the Ministry of Defence to end the confrontation peacefully. Contrast it with the military personnel who killed 72 protesters bound hand and foot at Tak Bai, and those who killed four unarmed villagers going to a funeral at Nong Chik. Though the first of these incidents, at Krue Se, took place nine years ago, no senior officer has been charged, let alone brought to trial, in any of these cases.
Dear reader, in which of these cases do you think justice was not only done but seen to be done? If you chose the first case, what are you doing to make our military subject to the rule of law? As His Majesty the King has already wisely noted, “If the country does not follow the rule of law, it will not survive.”
