What comes to mind is the speech on reconciliation given by Tony Blair, at the invitation of this government, just two months before at the same location.
Among the five points highlighted by Mr Blair was the importance of democracy as an anchor for reconciliation, and how democracy is not based on majority rule but on how the majority relates to the minority. It is not a case of “winner takes all”. There should be a shared space that includes the minority. Only against this background would reconciliation succeed, he suggested.
Well, now we know that his speech was a waste of time.
