Porntip Buranaprasertsuk ended her losing streak against Saina Nehwal by stunning the world No 6 Indian 21-17 9-21 21-15 in the women's singles second round of the Hong Kong Open yesterday.
In-form Porntip, who had lost all six previous matches to the Indian 2012 Thailand Open champion, secured a spot in the eight-player Super Series Finals, due next month in Kuala Lumpur.
“She [Saina] has some problem with her movement lately. So I moved her around and tried to finish points when I had the chance,” said Porntip, who will have to miss the SEA Games in Myanmar as it coincides with the Super Series Finals.
“I have played it twice, so I’m okay with that. It’d be better to give chances to young players with potential,” said the world No 10, who will take on either world No 1 Li Xuerui or Busanan Ongbumrungpan today.
World No 2 Ratchanon Intanon was due to play her second-round match against South Korea’s Yeon Ju Bae last night. Nichaon Jindapon lost to fourth seed and last week’s China Open winner, Wang Shixian, 21-13 11-21 21-17 in the first round on Wednesday.
In the women’s doubles second round, Misato Aratama and Megumi Taruno of Japan beat Savitree Amitrapai and Narissapat Lam 21-16 21-10.
