Beefed up for the holidays

Tables at the Erawan is grilling the best cuts of meat from the US, Japan and Australia

A RESTAURANT steeped in European dining traditions, Tables at the Grand Hyatt Erawan is luring in meat lovers these days with the irresistible aroma of grilling steaks wafting out the door.
Tables has the feel of someone’s home kitchen in France – except that it’s pretty posh and can seat 100. There are two private dining rooms set aside and five stations scattered about where the chefs do a bit of showing off.
The tallest of the tall hats is worn by Michel Eschmann, who guarantees exceptional quality in every dish throughout the current carnivore promotion. The juicy and smooth meats on offer include 240-day-grain-fed Angus beef from Australia, USDA Prime Nebraska beef and Wagyu from Kagoshima, Japan. There’s tenderloin, rib eye, sirloin, chateaubriand, T-bone, rump – you name it.
Chef Eschmann has trained his team in French-style preparation, varying the cooking temperature with every cut and grade of beef.
A fantastic dinner should start with a delectable appetiser, like the Crispy Seared Crab Cakes (Bt550) stuffed with shiitake mushrooms, served in a remoulade sauce. The creamy Boston lobster bisque (Bt750) is remarkable too.
A pair of chefs will then stroll over and show you how they prepare tuna tartare with avocado and tomato salsa (Bt650), or beef tartare (Bt550), or a Caesar salad in a unique mustard-based dressing (Bt350).
The main-course steaks are made for two people to share. Highly recommended is the Australian Angus beef, turned into
a 560-gram chateaubriand (Bt2,500) or a 900-gram tomahawk chop (Bt2,700). The USDA prime from the great cow-intensive state of Nebraska takes the form of a 220-gram tenderloin (Bt1,800) and a 560-gram rib eye for two (Bt3,100). The Kagoshima wagyu is a 250-gram sirloin (Bt2,800) and 300-gram rib eye (Bt3,400).

Your steak comes with creamy mashed potatoes and broccoli with a choice among four sauces – Bearnaise, black peppercorn, mushroom ragout and red-wine glaze.
You don’t eat beef? Well, you’re in the wrong place at the moment, but hang on – there’s a lovely Kurobuta Pork Chop with Calvados Apples.
You don’t eat meat at all? Not to worry: Have the Flamed Tiger Prawns in a Pernod sauce with bell pepper and zucchini, or the Dover Sole Meuniere.
You can get back in synch with the meat-wolves at your table when dessert time arrives. Again, these are European specialities. Do not miss the Hot Chocolate Souffle in raspberry sauce, served with chocolate ice cream. Alternatively, the Baked Alaska and Cherries Jubilee served with vanilla ice cream are magnificent too. Each of these costs Bt350.
