Move now to avert violence

Unless you and I, dear reader, move quickly to calm things down, I fear that the conflict between the demonstrators and government will end in bloodshed.

The protest, which began peacefully, is becoming less so. The government has invoked the Internal Security Act across Bangkok.
The demonstrators have a right to protest, but they must respect the rights of others, including their right to government services.
Yingluck had no right to declare that her government would ignore the verdict of the Constitutional Court, because the rule of law means that everyone comes under the law, including the executive branch. But, similarly, the demonstrators have no right to declare her government “illegitimate” and seek to stop it from functioning. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Stop attending the demonstrations, urge others to stop also, and support the Democrats’ no-confidence motion. If they lose in Parliament, then accept the rules of the game and gear up for the next election by building a solid platform that recognises the legitimate grievances of those who now support Thaksin as well as the rest of the country.
Act now, before blood is shed.
