Voices will be raised, claiming “freedom of expression”. Freedom of expression is a gift from democracy. Failure to promote democracy and condone and encourage its development will result in the loss of freedom of expression. The abuse of free speech is self-destructive.
Within Buddhism it is the intention that is important, not the act. While the PDRC “is far from perfect, nor all wise”, to quote Winston Churchill’s comment on democracy, its intention is to deliver true democracy to the country. Criticism of this intention is clearly championing the status quo – a form of government which is illegal, immoral and an insult to the country. Rather than continually criticise the PDRC, stand up and say, “We want the present system” or, better still, say nothing. But don’t attack attempts at democracy by abusing the English language.
