Diner on the sixth

Popular self-service restaurant Fujio Shokudo opens shop at MBK

SHOKUDO, a popular self-service restaurant from Osaka, has landed in Bangkok and is now offering an assortment of easy-to-eat, healthy Japanese dishes and desserts on the sixth floor of MBK shopping mall. Open since last month, it’s a joint venture between Fujio Food System and the Patum Ricemill and Granary, which is run by the MBK Group.
Known as Shokudo in Japan and with more than 400 franchises, the Bangkok outlet is called Fujio Shokudo. Cosy with a canteen-like ambience, the 86-seat eatery is simply furnished with tables and benches and allows diners a ringside view of the open kitchen.
Fish is king in Osaka and the restaurant carries on that tradition with a range of dishes guaranteed to please. Orders are prepared individually and the freshly milled rice bubbles away in an electronically controlled gas rice cooker for a softer and puffier texture.
At the first of the six cooking stations, we order Omelette Tamagoyaki (Bt69), in which the eggs are blended with a special home-made special sauce, traditional simmered cod (Bt280) in Nitsuke sauce and grilled salmon (Bt180) cooked on a charcoal brazier. Despite the tempting hamburger, sukiyaki and simmered yellowtail on offer, we skip the next counter and stop at the salad and sashimi station. Here we choose the Sashimi Platter (Bt880, a boat-shaped plate that’s bursting with prawns, squid, hokkigi shells as well as buri, maguro, salmon and pickled saba).
Rice, ramen, rice curry and miso soup are also available with iced green tea, soft drinks, lemon tea with green tea and vanilla ice cream at Bt39 a perfect way to end the meal.
