During my recent Songkran trip, I heard a lot about the judicial system being Thailand’s key target for reform. So the news that the court has ousted an elected government is certainly the biggest joke of the year so far. The international community is laughing out loud.
This naked power battle is not really about Thaksin’s family, but rather reflects a deep struggle between the country’s so-called elite and the voting masses. Shinawatra parties have won the last few elections, but the yellow shirts want to change the Constitution so that conservatives can regain control. Yingluck is not the first prime minister to be toppled by the judiciary and she will not be the last. I am surprised that an electoral democracy can be so easily ruined.
