A cupboard that looks like a house wins an award overseas for Bangkok studio Partly Cloudy
BUSINESS AT their recently opened furniture shop Partly Cloudy ought to pick up after Rangsit University interior-design graduates Paitoon Keatkeereerut and Chawin Hanjing won the platinum prize in an Italian design competition with their Baan dinner set cupboard.
Chawin and Paitoon make furniture with the slogan in mind “Liveable design creates new days”. It’s smart, functional and durable, ideal for younger urbanites living in compact spaces.
“Chawin works as a window-display stylist and I have a diploma interior design from Chelsea College of Arts and Design in the UK, so our designs combine art and functionality,” Paitoon says.
When he returned to Bangkok the pair reunited and opened the studio Partly Cloudy in JJ Plaza, which sells funky, custom-made furniture and home decor. Customers have a mul
titude of choices in pine, ash and oak from a catalogue and can order items in sizes and patterns to fit their own abode.
Ideal for a small kitchen, the award-winning Baan dinner-set cupboard with its black steel frame brings to mind the structure of a building. It looks like a modern house in which the “living room” is a holder for cutlery, the “staircase” is for plates, and “attic” is your wine cellar and the “basement” has your drawers.
“The black frame looks like stripes,” Paitoon points out. “We also have the Neighbourhood kitchen cupboard that looks like a townhouse and comes in four styles. Its shelves and drawers hold the tableware.”
A solid-ash Library bookcase has plenty of shelves and drawers for books and magazines of all sizes. A black metal barstool might have once been a swing. The X lounge chairs combine wood and metal with vintage flair.
“We’re launching a new collection,” Paitoon says, “a racquet holder that resembles a garage, a clothesline that’s back-to-basics in the way it functions, and a multipurpose cabinet that relates to the belief about what people should do before leaving home.”
