YOUNG DESIGNER Maneeya Nakornchai has always looked at life with a positive eye and now the founder of online jewellery site Wish Council is encouraging others to think positively too by wearing hand-crafted brass jewellery bearing optimistic symbols.
An industrial design graduate from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Lat Krabang, Maneeya was invited to showcase her work in the 2009 “Supermarket Idea” exhibition organised by the Thailand Creative and Design Centre. Later that year, she set up her Wish Council brand and launched her debut collection of necklaces, bracelets and earrings at CentralWorld’s Indy in Town fair.
Her simple but colourful jewellery featuring Thai numbers and bearing such popular Thai sayings as “Rak Sanook” (“pleasure-loving”) and “Sao Suay Sod” (“young, beautiful and single”) were quickly snapped up young generation shoppers.
Maneeya followed up with a Wish Council page on Facebook, on which she offered a full range of jewellery for women fashioned out plastic, metal and wood. These days, she’s using the more durable brass as her main material and says she finds it more malleable.
“Many customers buy my accessories to give as gifts so it makes sense to use Thai words and symbols that have a positive meaning. Other designs are adapted from my drawings,” she says.
To create different textures and colours, Maneeya coats some pieces with ruthenium, rhodium and gold on offer. Her designs are inspired by flowers, animals, western architecture and spiritual symbols and include necklaces and bracelets designed to resemble lace, stained glass and flowers.
She also has rings, pendants and earrings in cat, dog, owl, rabbit, squirrel, lizard, millipede and elephant shapes while her “word” pieces include “Lok Suay” (“positive mind”), “Sud Tee Rak” (“darling”), Bangkok, “Heng Heng” (“fortunate”) and “Poh Pieng” (“sufficient”).
More romantic pieces perfect |for an anniversary or special |occasions convey such messages |as “Khun Khue Khong Kwan” (“you’re my gift”) and Yak Kod Talod Pai” (“wanna cuddle you forever”).
She also accepts custom orders.
