Lofty principles lost in broadly based words

Re: "Socio-political factors were key to Thaksin's abuse of power", Letters, July 21

JC Wilcox states that Thailand needs a “comprehensive, broadly based education system that leads to the enlightenment of the electorate”. Well, on first reading that statement, it comes across as inspiring and high-principled, which was no doubt the effect the writer wished to achieve. In reality, however, it is just empty rhetoric – I do wonder what he actually means by “comprehensive” and “broadly based”. After all, the terms are so vague as to be virtually meaningless. Lectures are fine, so long as they impart some useful information.
