Animals need the generals' help

Last year the legislature unanimously passed a major animal-rights bill, the Animal Welfare Act, in second reading, one stage short of enactment. But then came the political turmoil and the coup, and the bill became history.
The only hope the bill has of revival would be if the coup leaders use their power to make it law.
If they did that, millions of animal-rights activists throughout the world would see the junta as being the most animal-friendly government in Thai history. That would be great public relations for the regime and enormously helpful to the animal-welfare movement. Everybody would win.
