MOST OF us have probably at one time or another hankered after one of those cool mailboxes with a steel post we see so often in American movies. Certainly, these seemingly weatherproof and attractively painted boxes would do a better job of keeping papers and yes, bills too, dry while adding also touch a glamour to the front gate.
Peyarut Aschaitrakool and her younger brother agree. They in fact fell in love with the mailboxes during a trip Hawaii 17 years ago but work and other commitments prevented them from finding the time to bring these American-style ornaments to local front doors.
Mailboxity, as their new venture is known, now has its own store at JJ Mall and offers a wide selection of American-style mailboxes in three sizes, many with fantastic designs.
“I’ve used the American-style, 19-inch mailbox at my home for more than a decade and I still find it charming. So I thought why not use the mould? We tested the market by showcasing the boxes at the Bangkok International Gift and Baan Lae Suan fairs and received positive feedback. I finally decided to open a shop in JJ Mall,” says Peyarut.
In addition to the standard 19-inch, powder-coated steel letterbox with steel stand in black, white, yellow and red, Mailboxity also offers 12- and 15-inch models. Prices range from Bt2,000 to Bt8,000 depending on size and design.
“Today’s compact living spaces don’t really allow for a 19-inch box, so we
decided to introduce two smaller sizes. All come with a choice of steel stand or bracket that can be fitted on the wall or a fence,” she adds.
“Our mailboxes are made from 0.9-mm harden steel finished with powder coating and are guaranteed to last for at least a decade.”
In addition to the plain-coloured boxes, Mailboxity now offers various patterns ranging from landscapes, letters of the alphabet and pets to flora and fauna. You can choose whether to have letterbox decorated with 3M sticker wrap or hand-painted with oil or acrylic paints. The pattern can be customised too, meaning you can include your name, your pet or even your favourite landscape on the letterbox.
“Some customers want portraits of their pets while others prefer place of which they have fond memories. We can’t promise that the images will be identical. As they are painted by hand, customers should expect to
wait about two weeks from order to delivery,” says Peyarut.
Among the more fantastic designs are mailboxes with carved figurines for stands or include Victorian-style outdoor lanterns. The latest has the mailbox fixed on a rotten tree stump while the base is brick flowerbed.
“Many customers don’t use our mailboxes to receive letters outside the home, but place it inside the house as a home decorative item to keep their stuffs like CDs and books,” she says.
