DANISH MANUFACTURER Carl Hansen & Son has "rediscovered" some of the iconic pieces designed by that country's leading architects as far back as the 1930s. The standard of craftsmanship remains high with the modern edition of Hans J Wegner's Wing Chair and Mogens Koch's Folding Chair, which are among the items now available in Bangkok at Chanintr Living's Craft Store.
Wegner is considered a master of chair design, conceiving 500 different models in the course of his life. A minimalist, he gave the furniture an organic, natural softness, making the most of the wood to give a piece character. One of the leading figures in 20th-century furniture design, he was a driving force in the "Danish Modern" movement that changed the way people looked at household decor in the 1950s and '60s.
In 2006 Hansen & Son used Wegner's original drawings for the 1960 Wing Chair and put it back into production. It's an upholstered armchair with a solid beech frame supported by light, perfectly contrasting aluminium legs. Renowned for its stylistic expression in the armrests and a backrest whose horizontal crease balances the wing-like protruding corners.
Wegner's 1952 Sawbuck resembles the carpenter's simplistic support table and is just as stable and yet quite light. The CH28 armchair is more sculptural in appearance and has an exceptional finish, upholstered or in solid oak or oak-walnut - the wood coming from sustainable forestry. The seat and back can be fabric or leather.
Ole Wanscher's Colonial Chair, first produced in 1949, entails his characteristic slenderness and resilient forms. The slightly curved armrests rise to an elegant tip before continuing directly to the floor. The seat is hand-woven cane. Upholstered in fabric or leather, this is a chair that's ideal for rooms where flexibility and lightness are desired.
Wanscher's 1957 Egyptian Stool drew inspiration from ancient Thebes. It's a mere folding stool, yet it exudes dignity and power. The construction and saddle-leather finish are outstanding.
Mogens Koch's 1932 Folding Chair is just as easy to transport and just as aesthetically pleasing, whether at the dining table or on the patio. It stabilises automatically when sat upon, ensuring comfort. Mounted brass rings ensure a smooth folding movement. Sold in oil-treated beech or mahogany, the chair has a seat and backrest of natural canvas or leather, in various colours. The armrests are full-grain leather.
