Thailand has rivers, oil reserves and its own natural gas, yet buys electricity from China.
When I lived in California, with hot tub, air-conditioner and many extras, my electricity bill was much lower than it is here. (The hot tub doubled my bill.)
That was also true in Nevada, where I had air-con on all day, plus numerous electrical appliances, and the bill rarely broke $100 a month.
