Thailand loses another great artist

National Artist Prayat Pongdam passed away Friday morning at the age of 79 from heart failure.

One of Thailand’s great printmaking pioneers, his rooster was reprinted on a Thai postage stamp. Prayat was also among the six Thai artists who created the illustrations for His Majesty the King’s book “Mahajanaka”.
Prayat was born in 1934 in Sing Buri and earned his Bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Silpakorn University in 1957. He also studied at L’Accademia di Belle Art in Rome Italy and was awarded his diploma in 1962. In 1998, the Culture Ministry named Prayat a National Artist in the field of visual art.
Earlier this month, Thailand lost national artist Thawan Duchanee. Prayat attended the cremation last week at Wat Thepsirin.
The Royal Ritual bath is being held at 5 pm Friday at Wat Thepsirin, Sala 1. Funeral services are held until September 26 and the Royal cremation will be held on September 27 at the temple.
