It's in the bag

A PR consultant by training, Thanikan Pornpongsaroj has recently been showing her creative side with a range of fun clutches made of glossy acrylic under the brand name Debutante O’Couture – DOC for short.

Her materials come from the family factory, which fabricates plastic and acrylic sheets for the toy and electrical appliance industries. 

Thanikan, a graduate in communication arts from Chulalongkorn University, says the raw material is perfect for turning into trendy accessories for the urban fashionista.

“I’m interested in my parent’s business but I also have a creative streak as well as a real passion for fashion and design products. The project started after I went to a party carrying a clutch I had designed for fun. My friends loved it and said they thought I should make them for sale. So I decided to give it a try,” Thanikan says.

In April, she and her younger brother, a decorative arts graduate from Silpakorn University, opened an online shop on Instagram, offering clutches covered with faux-crystals as well as bearing messages like “Gossip! Gossip! It's my gift and passion”, “Why join the navy if you can be a pirate?”, “Keep your head, heels and standards high”, “One shoes can definitely change a woman’s life” and “Just because I don’t have a prince, doesn’t mean I'm not a princess”.

Celebrities quickly snapped them up and put them on their Instagram pages and before long DOC had more than 12,000 followers. Now DOC is expanding into real life, becoming the newest member of Siam Paragon’s Bags & Shoes department.

Five new collections are currently on offer. The Journey line has glittering clutches designed to look like cameras, passports and postcards that can be personalised with the 

 owner’s name and address.

The playful Villian line boasts such cute characters as Mr Moustache, Maleficent and Little Monster picked out in black and crystalline. The Player collection is inspired by Pacman, chess and dominoes and offers a lesson in avoiding mistakes made in the past. 

“Our clutches are heavier and thicker than most other bags on the market, but we guarantee durability. We use a combination of hand-finishing and modern laser technology to create the diverse textures and designs,” Thanikan says. 

“Each clutch is equipped with a chain and has a glitter bag inside to hold accessories and cosmetics. We also offer a line of lovely magnet charms for bags in several designs. And our after-sales service can help out with any scratches you get on your clutch.”

Partygoers will love the simple and elegant Classic Black clutch in black and gold while ladies wanting to make an impression can opt for the Palette with its geometric forms and fun graphics.
