Asean ambitions are being lost in translation

Re: Horace Beasley's 'Quote of the week'.

This morning my wife and I took our youngest niece to her school for a parent-teacher meeting, where we met the deputy head of the school, a likeable Thai lady with some knowledge of English.
She told us that, with Asean integration forthcoming, our niece would have a choice of learning either Chinese or Korean next term.
I asked her why, since neither country is part of Asean, which somewhat surprised her. She did not appear to know that and didn’t proffer an answer.
My further question as to whether our niece would learn Mandarin or Cantonese brought the outstanding answer: “No, the only choice is Chinese or Korean.” Thai education never ceases to amaze me. Enough said.
