William Morris at the Met

The talents of history's most celebrated arts-and-crafts aficionado are yours to share

THE METROPOLITAN Museum of Art stores have a gorgeous set of home-decor reproductions that pay homage to William Morris, the celebrated English textile maker and craftsman of the 19th century.
These are copies of the items on view at the New York museum, harking back to the days when Morris could in 1890, for example, be so inspired by the scent of the garden flower Dianthus that he’d turn around and create a wonderful wallpaper pattern. He made it by hand, in block prints.
The William Morris collection also includes a glass vase with decals, a porcelain pitcher in a gift box, a pair of Cherwell porcelain mugs you can use in the microwave.
Meanwhile there’s a sleek Compton black-ink ballpoint pen with a brass barrel and lacquer-and-gold-overlaid clip. It takes a Schmidt P900 or standard Parker refill, so no worries about actually using it for its intended purpose.
You’ll also find a box set of 20 beautiful notecards, 12 gift enclosures, 32 envelopes and 35 self-adhesive seals.
The Met has branches at the Kian Gwan House, Peninsula Plaza and Emporium. Call (02) 652 1694 or (02) 651 4117.
