Public and private organisations and agencies are once again joining up to mark His Majesty the King’s 87th birthday on December 5 with a charity cycling project dubbed “Bike for the King”.
They include the Phra Dabos Project in the Southern Border Provinces, the Phra Dabos Foundation, Chulalongkorn University, the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Song Kanong Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, Toyota Leasing (Thailand) and Thai Ticket Major.
“This year’s ‘Bike for the King’ is made up of several activities,” Panu Uthairat, secretary-general of the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, told journalists during the recent press conference at Chulalongkorn University.
“The project aims to raise funds for the Phra Dabos School and support its activities to educate and train underprivileged youth in the southern border provinces and at the same time express our concern and goodwill to the officials and residents of the violent south.”
“Last year, we at Toyota Leasing celebrated our 20th anniversary with the CSR campaign titled ‘Toyota Leasing Hero Ride’ and raised Bt3.4 million to construct a new building for the students at Phra Dabos School in Yala province,” said Henry Tolentino, president of Toyota Leasing (Thailand).
“The event this year is dedicated to His Majesty the King, the beloved King of the Thai people. It is also the first time that an anticipated 7,000 cyclists will ride out on to the Bhumibol Bridge and form themselves into the words ‘Long Live the King’. With all these highlights, this event is going to make history.”
The project, which takes place on December 14, has four start points: beneath Bhumibol Bridge, Soopanava, Wat Khan Lad, and the Sawmill in Soi Mobil. From there, participants will cycle to the point where Bhumibol Bridge 1 and 2 bridges connect and position themselves to form the words, “Long Live the King”. They will then race along the bridge towards the Khlong Lat Pho Floodgate Royal Project with the first 500 cyclists coming in receiving a “Ride for the King” medal.
Warawut “Tum The Star 9” Poyim and Sothipan “Amen The Star 10” Kamleungcha, Samran “Eed Fly” Chuaichamnaek, Miss Grand Thailand 2013 Yada Theppanom, Miss Supranational Thailand 2013 Thanyaporn Srisen and Miss Thailand 2010 first runner-up Worarat “Opal” Niyomdej also put in an appearance at the press conference.
