Graca set to inaugurate AVC headquarters

President of the international volleyball federation (FIVB) Ary Graca of Brazil arrived in Bangkok yesterday to preside over the inauguration of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) headquarters at the Sports Authority of Thailand building today.

The headquarters has been shifted from Beijing to Bangkok following the decision of the AVC board of administration in Incheon, South Korea, in April this year.
Graca said: “We have decided to shift the AVC headquarters from Beijing to Bangkok because it is situated in the centre of Asia. No matter where you are in Asia, you can arrive in Bangkok conveniently. It saves the cost of travelling for the members when they have to attend a board meeting in Thailand.
“After going through the FIVB website, we found that a large number of Thai fans are interested in volleyball. We thought it would be a good idea to get development of this sport off the ground in a country where its people have passion for volleyball. For sure, the sport of volleyball has gained immense popularity in Thailand. Its women’s volleyball team is making a mark globally.
“They finished in the top four in Asia and always came up with great performances in international tournaments. Thailand can become the volleyball hub of Asia.
“Communication between Thailand and the 65 affiliated countries could become better, especially for the development of both indoor and beach volleyball. The popularity of beach volleyball has improved dramatically in Asia. Even a small country like Vanuatu have proved that they can be successful in major overseas beach competitions. I hope small countries will get full support from the AVC headquarters in Thailand,” he added.
